beginners lip tattooing Aug 07, 2022

Fordyce spots are very common in fact approximately 80% of adults have visible fordyce spots but what exactly are they and what do you need to consider when treating a client that has them present.

What are Fordyce Spots?

Fordyce spots present as small raised bumps that appear on the lips; they usually develop as isolated or scattered bumps but they can occasionally cluster together. They are pale red, whitish-yellow or skin coloured in appearance. These spots are also known as Fordyce granules and sebaceous prominence. Fordyce spots are simply enlarged oil glands and they are completely normal, harmless, and painless and  are not infectious.

What causes Fordyce Spots?

There is no specific cause of Fordyce spots, but they can become more prominent in people with oily skin and as our bodies experience hormonal changes during puberty. Both men and women can experience them. They can become more prominent after lip fillers with the increased volume in the area.

How to treat a client with Fordyce Spots

To remove or reduce the appearance of Fordyce spots you should never squeeze or extract them. Permanent make up is a very effective method to treat the appearance of these spots by evening out the lip tone, making them less visible or even camouflaging them completely!

Performing cosmetic tattoo over the spots is completely safe and not a contraindication to the treatment. You will need to consider the use of pigments with high dispersion and also consider performing short stroke movements or a stippling movement as you pass over them. It is also recommended to reduce the speed while working on them.

I hope this helps to clarify what Fordyce spots are and what to consider when treating your clients, If you have any questions, or would like to know more please reach out to us via email:
